Health officials in Nakuru have revealed shocking details about the absurd spike of HIV/AIDS cases in Nakuru county among teenagers. The health department has stated that over 40% of new is occurring cases mainly among young girls and women aged 14-35 years.
The report read: “There was an increase in infection among adolescents aged 10-19 years from 185 in 2020 to 297 in 2021. This trend is comparatively higher than the national estimate, which shows that infection dropped from 18,004 in 2006 to 5,294 in 2021.”
Nakuru recorded a 17% drop in AIDS-related deaths among adolescents aged 10-19 between 2020 to 2021. The county governor Susan Kihika raised the alarm over the increase in the number of new infection cases in the county during international World AIDS day on December 1st.
Most of these cases can be attributed to increased poverty levels in the country and a lack of sufficient sensitization to HIV/AIDs.Most teenagers engage in unprotected sex and their worry is early pregnancy as most health centres have had a low turn of those taking Prep drugs compared to P2s.
